This session provides participants with essential knowledge and skills with respect to the assessment and management of violence risk. The overarching goal is that participants will be able to conduct violence risk assessments and develop management plans. The session focuses on general principles. Risk assessment is discussed with the framework of structured professional judgment and Risk management, within the framework of scenario planning. The application of general principles to specific types of violence in specific settings will be illustrated. Participants also will discuss the association between violence and mental disorder, and learn simple ways to identify and communicate about symptoms of acute mental illness and personality disorder.

Stalking differs from many other forms of violence in three important ways; it is targeted, highly personal and can persist for many years, even decades. The Guidelines for Stalking Assessment and Management (SAM) are structured professional judgment (SPJ) guidelines for use by law enforcement, criminal justice, security and mental health personnel. The SAM builds on previous SPJ approaches to violence risk assessment, most notably the SARA and RSVP. Attendees will get an overview of how to administer the SAM and discuss the use of SAM in risk management. A copy of the SAM manual is included in the course fee.
